“Countries are still not cashing in on the real potential of Organic Waste” : SMS Hydrotech’s Founder sheds a light on Food Waste Management

Ever Imagined what your mother does of the kitchen waste generated throughout the day? Throw it in the dustbin, right? Well, thanks to our crippled waste management systems, after the food or organic waste is dumped from one dustbin to another. To shed more light on this topic, we had Surya V. Singh, Founder of SMS Hydrotech, a waste management equipment manufacturing company, with us who gave an insight to how this organic waste is not only becoming a global problem but is also a big missed opportunity that many are not cashing on.

Singh said that Municipalities and Governments today, instead of focusing on treating the food waste right at source are jut dumping it from one place to another. This mismanagement of organic waste not only produces ill odor, but also acts as a breeding ground for various carriers that spread many diseases ahead. Also, once this waste starts decomposing it produces methane (CH4) which contributes to Global Warming. Singh claimed that after industrial waste, the organic waste was responsible for most of the global emissions.

Singh focused on the fact that there is an urgent need to treat the organic waste right at the source itself, he said that by using basic tools and techniques one can easily convert this waste into organic manure and compost that can be used to grow crops which will also reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers. Not only this, but the waste can also be used as animal fodder.

According to Singh, the waste can easily be reduced by 80-90% using modern tools and techniques right at the source itself which can save a lot of transportation and emissions at the same time. There has been a global call to reduce carbon footprints and emissions and ensure better waste management as the world looks to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Global bodies like UNESCO and UN have already released guidelines so as to ensure that countries work in harmony to make this world a better place to live in.
