Significant participation of youth in Purplethon EPILEPSY AWARENESS (WALK FOR A CAUSE)

Pune (Maharashtra) [India]: Rotary Club of Pune Baner in Synergy with Indian Institute Of Education & Business Management and Indus Champs School recently organised a special walkathon called ‘Purplethon’ in the morning at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi. 

The event was organised with the aim of creating awareness about Epilepsy Surgery in the society in which more than 350 people participated with great enthusiasm. The participation of the youth was significant in the Walkathon. A distance of five kilometres was covered for the walkathon within the stadium campus. Drinking water, refreshments and first aid was provided. Also, doctors were deployed at certain distances considering emergency situations. The walkathon (WALK FOR A CAUSE) was flagged off by Rotarian Manjoo Phadke,  District Governor of Rotary International District, 3131. 

The walkathon was followed by a demonstration of Zumba, the current popular form of exercise, given by Assistant Governor (zone 6) of Rotary International District, 3131 and Zumba trainer  Rtn. Smeeta Shitole. Under the initiative of Rotary Club of Pune Baner, Epilepsy surgeries are conducted in collaboration with Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. Dr. Nilesh Kurwale, who heads the Epilepsy centre at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital  concluded the program by giving an awareness speech on the disorder of epilepsy.  Dr. Kurwale said, “Epilepsy is a disease that can be completely cured or controlled but requires treatment. Surgery for complex or drug-resistant epilepsy is very safe and the patient recovers completely. This surgery is a life-changing experience for the patients and their families.”

Underprivileged patients undergo surgery through Corporate Social Responsibility Fund (CSR Fund). “Rotary Club of Pune Baner  has played an important role in performing 15 successful surgeries from July 1, 2023 till now”, said club President Rtn. Jigneshh Karria at the closing ceremony.

Madhukar Deshmukh, Rtn. Nitin Wagh, Rtn. Unmesh Risbood,  Associate Dean of IIEBM Dr. Bhole , IIEBM faculty Sandeep Mane, Rotaract Club President,Rtr. Pranav Bhegade, faculty  Swati Gupta of Indus Champs School actively participated.
