City Surgeons Restore Missing Testis in 13-Month-Old Baby Through Innovative Surgery at Apollo Spectra

New Delhi, [India], 19 Feb, 2025: Surgeons of the city once again proved their extraordinary expertise and successfully restored the missing testis of a 13-month-old baby, delivering hope and relief to his family. The surgery at Apollo Spectra, Pusa Road highlights the power of precise diagnostics and advanced surgical techniques in transforming lives.

The baby, weighing 9.6 kilograms, was brought to Apollo Spectra, Pusa Road on December 30, 2024, by his mother, who had noticed the absence of his left testis in the scrotal sac since birth. Despite consultations elsewhere, the testis could not be located through ultrasound, and a team led by Dr. Atul Sardana, Senior Consultant and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Apollo Spectra Hospitals finally decided to go by a minimal invasive abdominal surgery- Orchidopexy.

Dr. Atul Sardana, Senior Consultant at Apollo Spectra Hospital, said, “We conducted an MRI and identified the missing testis at the root of the scrotum. This allowed us to propose a simpler and minimal invasive procedure to bring the testis into the scrotal sac. By avoiding complex abdominal surgery, we significantly reduced surgical risks, costs, and recovery time for the baby.”

“Orchidopexy, the surgery to bring down the testis, should ideally be performed before a child’s first birthday. This maximizes the chance of preserving testicular function and reduces the risk of complications, including cancer,” added Dr. Sardana.

The surgery was performed with precision by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthetists, and pediatricians. Lasting under 30 minutes, the procedure ensured that the testis was successfully brought down and fixed in the scrotal sac. Remarkably, the baby resumed feeding within four hours and was discharged the next morning.

The surgeon designed the closure to avoid stitches, which are challenging to manage in babies. Additionally, no dressing was required, considering the surgical site’s exposure to diaper wetting. “This approach ensured the baby’s comfort and minimized post-operative care challenges for the family,” said Dr Sardana.

During fetal development, testes form near the kidneys and migrate into the scrotum, as lower temperatures are essential for sperm maturation. When this migration is incomplete, it results in undescended testes, a condition requiring timely intervention.

According to Dr Sardana, in addressing congenital anomalies like this case early diagnosis and expert care play very important role. The compassionate and innovative approach by Apollo Spectra Hospital brought smiles in the faces of entire family of the baby.

“We express our deep gratitude to Dr Sardana and Apollo Spectra Hospital for their treatment and compassionate care. We are very happy that our baby got rid of  a congenital defect and grow as normal-active kid,” said  mother of the baby.
