Mumbai Metropolitan Region to Get Its First Space Education Lab in Thane!

  • Amber International School and Vyomika Space Academy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Saturday!
  • The lab will be established under the ‘Space Tutor Program’ of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)!

Thane (Maharashtra) [India], July 07, 2025: Amber International School and Vyomika Space Academy have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s first ‘Space Education Lab’ under ISRO’s ‘Space Tutor Program’. Under this MoU, the first ‘Space Education Lab’ in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will be set up at Amber International School in Thane. The announcement was made at a press conference on Saturday.

The lab will set up at Amber International School, managed under conceptualization and mentorship of Shri. Laxman Kadam with the goal of introducing students from Thane and nearby areas to space research.

The MoU was formally signed on Saturday, in the presence of space research expert Dr. Pratik Mungekar, Vyomika Space Academy’s Govind Yadav, Senior ISRO scientist Dr. T. N. Suresh Kumar (was present through a video conference), Amber International Schools’s Shri. Laxman Kadam, Sharda Education Society’s Secretary Prof. Dr. Pradeep Dhawal and President Vilas Thuse, Mr. Kalpesh Jadhav( Program & Admin Head ), Shri. Dilip Tripathi ( Director, Public Relatives Vyomika ) and as well as teachers, non-teaching staff, parents, students and other dignitaries of Amber International School were present at this historical event.

Amber International School Managed by Shri. Laxman Kadam who is always keen on providing the best to the students ensured that the lab will use experiential and gamified learning approaches to encourage student participation, aiming to nurture future astronauts, space scientists and engineers.

Mr.Govind Yadav of Vyomika Space Academy added that this facility will help students gain foundational knowledge of space research and inspire them to pursue it further.

Prof. Dr. Pratik Mungekar, who spearheaded the initiative, highlighted that education can drive social progress and create career opportunities. He pointed out that Maharashtra’s participation in space research has remained limited despite abundant talent, mainly due to inadequate infrastructure. He expressed confidence that early exposure and dedicated facilities like this lab will encourage more Maharashtra’s students to enter the field. He also emphasized that with its strong educational and industrial base, Maharashtra has the potential to make significant contributions to India’s space research sector. Dr. Mungekar also said that if Space Science and Innovation Labs are established in schools, students from both rural and urban areas can be connected to the world of technology.

Sharda Education Society’s Secretary and renowned educationist Prof. Dr. Pradeep Dhawal shared that the lab aims to make learning more engaging and motivating. Prof. Dr. Dhawal said that Maharashtra has been blessed with bright tradition of science researchers like Legendary Dr. Jayant Narlikar, Dr. Anil Kakodkar and Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar. Drawing inspiration from these eminent scientists, we have decided to set up the first Space Education Lab in the Mumbai metropolitan area at Amber International School. The lab would be established to ISRO standards and offer students mentorship from renowned experts.

On this occasion, renowned ISRO scientist Dr. T. N. Suresh Kumar, who was present through video conferencing, congratulated the concerned parties for this MoU and wished them well for the establishment of the laboratory. He said such labs will shape India’s space research landscape by sparking curiosity and creativity among young learners.
